HOLY NAME JESUS SCHOOL

CATHOLIC K - 8 ABOVE AVERAGE 333 4

I find Holy Name to be a great enviroment for children. When you come to Holy Name, you are welcomed into a family that teaches excellent Catholic values. Being apart of the parish and seeing the young men and women that have come from that family, I wouldn't hesitate putting my child there. The teachers make the children feel like they are about to jump into a new adventure every day, and the children are eager to learn. From the smallest child in the Montessori program to the oldest young man or woman in eighth grade, they are all well- mannered and courteous to whomever they see in the street or walking the halls. They have a great respect for themselves and for the school. Holy Name is an excellent school to start a child's educational and social development in today's society.

I am a professor of Education at CUNY and I love this school! The teachers are superb and the climate of the school is extremely welcoming. It is academically rigerous and they have a high success rate on the NY State Tests in both 4th and 8th grade. They offer gym, creative movement, and art (not enough and the PTAB is working on that!) as well as a nice after-school program. My son and my daughter are both very happy here. Check it out!

While there is a learning curve - more in terms of learning time management and scheduling, rather than academically, we are so happy our son is in this school. He is struggling to keep on top of his homework right now, but he will get there. Nevertheless, he feels he made the right choice in moving to this school, is happy and has many friends among classmates. It certainly seems as nurturing and supportive of academically inclined children as we initially thought. It was worth the work to enable him to be accepted. He was so thrilled to get that letter. The principal and his staff all seemed totally committed to empowering the children to reach their potential and go on to great schools. We look forward to seeing our son flourish here.

This school has been through many progressive changes, from being having mediocre principals during 1999 - February 2004. Not providing sufficient extracurricular programs or reaching out to its parents. Not until the newest principal which I will name Ms. A. who began as an IA in P.S.145 in February 2004 til present added programs and the spirit of the school has been lifted and blossomed tremendously. The school also has a Gifted and Talented program, soccer, computer classes and other programs for enrichment. The school also has a very involved Parent Coordinator and together with the principal has increased the level of parent involvement. The school will help brighten future of children who attend.

During the enrollment process in 2010, we were offered a G&T seat at PS 163. We did not know much about the school at the time but from the moment we walked in the school doors we knew we found a D3 hidden gem of a school. The administration is available and is a constant presence in the school. The teachers are dedicated, hard working and have always been willing to give extra time to help support our child s education and development. I especially like the trailers for the kindergarten classrooms. I had neutral feelings about them going into the school year but they turned out to be ideal. The kids have their own bathroom, drop off & pick up are at the classroom door and there is a nice play yard just for the kindergartners. The school does not raise as much money as some of the other D3 schools but I feel the school and PTA have done a great job in choosing the right places to spend the money. The school community is warm and inviting. There is a great sense of pride in the school and all the programs offered in the school; Gen Ed, Dual Language & G&T, work together to make this possible.

PS/MS 165 is undergoing an incredible transformation of quality education supported by a refreshing educational staff determined to achieve academic excellence for our children. This is largely owed to the uncanny leadership of Brett Gallini, the school s principal. Through hands-on involvement and encouragement of collaborative work between teachers and parents, he demonstrates his commitment to our children s success and holds his staff accountable to it. My child was performing under average and in one semester we have seen his grades rise to the upper nineties and the lowest grades are now in the mid-eighties. Teachers are available to assist children in their learning endeavors as they make themselves available before or after classes. Facts speak more than words, but in order to obtain these results the school needed a visionary who believes in children and understands the importance of a strong educational network to support them. I have no doubt that this will shortly be one of the most sought out public school in the Upper West Side. Parent

This is one of the sweet little secrets of the Upper West Side. It's a loving, caring school community; project-based learning which teaches the kids to work together; teachers who practically tailor the lessons for the children and yet don't coddle them; the principal herself is gentle and clear and guides children directly in one-on-one sessions. For some reason it's still overlooked by most New York parents. The school humanely and gently produces excellent intellectual responses in their kids. The school also takes in kids with learning disabilities and brings out their best performances (self-contained and CTT/ICT). From Day 1, they teach the kids life skills, such as the kids conduct their own assessments each quarter, so that by the end of their time there, they are ready to confidently handle the high school interview process--and of course interviews later in life. Kids go from this school into some of the best high schools, depending on their personal performance. They have a history of working with children who have dealt with personal difficulty and have helped them find their footing again. A remarkable school. Run do not walk to send your child here.

The small class sizes (max 14 in a class) allows the teachers to give individual attention both to the students who need extra challenges and to those who need extra support in particular area. No student gets to hide or be overlooked. Although we have always been very pleased with the teachers, the bar has been raised in 2011/12 with the best group of teachers, several of whom are also pursuing masters degrees in education while teaching. The school has a new principal this year who goes out of her way to welcome parents. Truly a home away from home.

Bank Street pretty much invented the idea of progressive education. The holistic approach develops both academic and social skills. Highly diverse group of parents. Fewer ostentatious displays of wealth than at other private schools of comparable educational quality. Cirriculum is well considered and planned.

My daughter has had a wonderful experience at P.S. 75. She enjoys music, art, chess every week and in second grade is now writing very creative stories in writers workshop. The Everyday Math program works for her and being in an inclusion class has not slowed her down one bit. The PTA hosts many family events throughout the year such as movie nights and chess nights so there is always something to do.The parents are very involved and the principal meets with them monthly to hear their concerns. Ballroom dancing for the 5th grade and an excellent children's chorus were recently added to the extracurricular enrichment activities. I think we also have one of the best afterschool programs in the district. This is a school worth considering.

My daughter is in second grade in the dual language Spanish program, and we could not be happier. The teacher is outstanding, the principal shows wonderful leadership, and the parental involvement is extremely high. After coming out of a "boot camp" style charter school, this is what school should be. My daughter excels academically, and absolutely enjoys every day at PS 84. It is a wonderful, nurturing environment where children can enjoy learning.

I'm a community parent (which means my child got in by lottery). My son has been at the school since K and he loves it. It is a progressive school with an extremely diverse student body which is the right place for my son. It is also well equipped technologically although there is little space for the children at recess. The after school program is also very good with interesting options for the children such as fencing for the older grades. As with all new (and old?) schools, there have been some problems in administration, but they seem to iron themselves out as all matters are addressed quickly. This school does not cater for school lunches and students must bring in a packed lunch every day.
